Museum of History and Local Lore Sarata

Sarata Museum of History and Local Lore
Sarata village, Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Raion, Odesa Oblast

The museum has been in existence since 1959, initiated by V. A. Poimanov, the director of the Sarata school at the time. The main fund consists of 596 museum artifacts. The current exhibition is divided into six sections: "Traces of the Great Cultures of Bessarabia", "Socio-Economic Development in the 19th Century", "The Founding of Sarata and its Development from 1822–1940", "The Romanian Period 1918–1940", "The Second World War 1939–1945", "The Post-War Period", "The Contemporary Period".

The museum staff constantly works to replenish its holdings on modern history and ethnography. Contacts have been established with former residents of Sarata and surrounding villages who now live in Germany. This collaboration has yielded materials related to the history of the Bessarabian Germans: books, postcards, documents, handicraft samples, and household items.

The museum actively promotes the history of its village and region: the number of public events has increased, and exhibitions are constantly organized. Its excursion activities are not limited to the museum's displays. Tours often take place directly on the streets, near houses, and at landmarks.

All of this creates an appealing image for the museum; consequently, the museum is gaining recognition not only in Ukraine but also abroad.

For this project, photographic materials were used, which were taken during the historical and ethnographic expeditions of 2001–2003 and 2007–2009 (led by Candidate of Historical Sciences V. V. Solodova) to the former German colonies of the Black Sea region – in villages of the Odesa and Mykolaiv Oblasts.
The Virtual Museum of the Black Sea Germans is supported by the European Union under the House of Europe programme.
